The event, held under the theme "Building Bridges through Languages", brought together participants from various regions of Australia to highlight the value of multilingualism and multiculturalism.
During the conference, the words of Nelson Mandela were invoked: "When you speak a person's language, you reach their heart." In a similar vein, Mr. Enzo Sirna, Vice President of Community Languages Australia (CLA) in Western Australia, reminded attendees that "one language allows us to stand in the hallway of life, two languages open every door." These inspiring quotations became the guiding theme of the event, emphasizing the importance of languages in building bridges between cultures.
Professor Joseph Lo Bianco of the University of Melbourne drew attention to the consequences of language decline in Australia and their significance for social cohesion. He stated, "Languages are pathways to belonging," underscoring their crucial role in fostering social harmony. The professor also called for the need for a new language policy in Australia that caters to the evolving educational needs.
Dr. Maria Gindidis from Monash University emphasised that language school teachers are leaders in language education, also inspiring European countries. In her address, she noted that languages are more than just communication tools—they are bridges between cultures and generations. She discussed intergenerational projects, such as collaborations with aged care homes and classes for the youngest. She highlighted the need for an innovative approach that includes collaboration with artificial intelligence and the creation of hybrid learning environments that integrate tradition and modernity.
The workshop segment provided an opportunity to delve into topics related to technology, multilingualism, and the future of language education. It was emphasised that language education is more than just learning—it is nurturing culture, tradition, and social relationships.
The closing panel discussion of the conference focused on the successes of ethnic language schools in overcoming challenges. Examples were given of innovative projects, such as organising school fairs and cross-cultural dance performances. The importance of language teaching as a tool for fostering lasting bonds between communities was also highlighted.
This year's conference was a unique event that showcased how languages can be bridges connecting people.
